Description

“[T]he scientific study of suggestion (what suggestion can and cannot do as well as the neural correlates of hypnosis, motivation, and mindset) has become a major part of my life. What I discovered was that mindset was not just an ethereal, abstract notion but a brain state typified by characteristic neurophysiology, functional neuroanatomy, and behavioral outcomes. My research, moreover, binds brain scans, experimental psychology, and clinical science to the techniques of empirical neuroscience. I can now explain why suggestion can change blood flow and body temperature, but not hemoglobin or cholesterol levels.

The science (and entertainment value) packed into the “power of suggestion” is attractive, newsworthy, and of topical interest to wide and diverse audiences… [M]any other media appearances have demonstrated that the topic of suggestion and mindset fascinates many curious generalists across a spectrum of multidisciplinary domains: from business and marketing sectors through clinical medicine all the way to self-help domains, motivational spheres, and showbusiness.

1. Contextualize hypnotic suggestion in the greater fabric of suggestion drawing on contemplative practice such as meditation, motivation, and derivatives of mindfulness.

2. Compare suggestibility and predictability and how they relate to each other in a research context.

3. Discuss one difficulty in creating a definition of suggestibility.

4. Explain the role of two brain areas, the anterior cingulate cortex and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, in the context of hypnosis.

5. Give three examples of how suggestibility impacts legal, social, and political situations.

Biography

Dr. Amir Raz is a leading cognitive neuroscientist and educator. He received a Ph.D. in Brain Science and Neuropsychology from the Interdisciplinary Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the supervision of the late Israel Prize Recipient, Professor Shlomo Bentin. He then went on to a postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Michael Posner, a member of the American National Academy of Science and recipient of the National Medal of Science at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where he later took on a faculty position. A few years later, Dr. Raz joined the faculty at Columbia University as well as The New York State Psychiatric Institute. In 2007 he moved north, with his family, to become the Canada Research Chair in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. Currently Dr. Raz is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Founding Director of The Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences (The Brain Institute) at Chapman University.

Dr. Raz is former Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology & Neurosurgery, and Psychology at McGill University in Montreal, Senior Researcher at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research in the Jewish General Hospital and the Institute for Community and Family Psychiatry, and a member of the Montreal Neurological Institute (The Neuro)—one of the premier brain research centers in the world. With more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, multiple research grants (most recently one of more than seven million dollars from the Templeton Foundation to research suggestion and free will), six academic books, and a long list of academic accolades and merit distinctions, Dr. Raz is a world-renowned expert on the neuroscience of attention, cognition, thought, and emotion.
